The Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Foundation awarded scholarships to nine SBL employees at the Foundation’s annual scholarship reception, helping employees who are furthering their educations.
Foundation scholarships are funded through endowments established by donors. This year, nine scholarships were awarded.
“The generous donors who established these endowments within the Foundation have made, and continue to make a tremendous impact on dozens of Sarah Bush Lincoln employees who are furthering their educations,” Amy Card, director, SBL Health Foundation, said. “These educational endowments are easy to arrange and will produce scholarship awards forevermore. We’re so grateful for the incredible generosity of local families and congratulate the award recipients.”
Caprice Smith, office assistant, Mattoon Walk-In Clinic, and Savannah Birch, clerical assistant, Emergency Department, each received the Dr. Stan and Maggie Huffman Award. The Huffman endowment was created to assist a current SBL nurse, or employee enrolled in school to become a nurse, with their education.
The Dr. Kiran and Nandini Joag Award was given to Sara Hancock, RN, Pacemaker Services. The Joag Endowment was also created to assist a current SBL nurse, or employee enrolled in school to become a nurse, with their education. The award was created in honor of Dr. Joag’s long-time nurse, Wendy Henson.
Jayme Campe, certified medical assistant, SBL Regional Cancer Center, received the Junie Longcor Award. Junie Longcor’s family was pleased with the care she received at the SBL Regional Cancer Center, so they created the award for a cancer center employee in her memory.
The Mildred Sidell Perry Award was awarded to Mallory Bollander, Surgery Center navigator, and Lana Keigley, RN, Progressive Care Unit. In 2002, Keith Perry, former SBL board member, created a memorial fund for his mother, Mildred Sidell Perry, whose nursing career spanned six decades.
Amber Sowers, nurse specialist, Cardiology Clinic, received the Dr. John Jemsek Award. The award was created in 1998 to honor Dr. Jemsek, a long-time member of the SBL medical staff, and to recognize an outstanding nurse.
The Li-Shiang Chang Award was awarded to Brandon Wilson, RN, Intensive Care Unit. The award established up by the Chang grandchildren in honor of their grandparents who received care in the ICU.
Taylor Johnson, RN, Special Procedures, was awarded the Dr. James Van Popering Award. Dr. Van Popering, a former SBL gastroenterologist, created the scholarship in 2004 to assist nurses in the Gastroenterology Clinic.
