Jaimie Albert, RN, and Sydney Hadfield, RN, were honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at Sarah Bush Lincoln on January 28.
Albert and Hadfield were nominated after making a big impression on a patient who was hospitalized while out of state and far from family. Here’s an except from his nomination letter:
“As a Secret Service agent (retired) with 40 years’ experience, I have been in hospitals all over the world, including Rochester, Minn. (Mayo), Houston, TX, (MD Anderson) and Washington, DC, (GW) among others. Never have I been in a hospital with nurses and staff as pleasant, nice and compassionate as your hospital.
While the entire nursing staff and care providers on 4 East were excellent, there are two nurses who I feel went above and beyond what might have been expected of them. Their compassion and concern for me and attitude toward me was quite professional, yet their sense of care, sense of humor and all around generous helpfulness and cheerfulness made me feel very special. This treatment endeared both of them to me, and I know this contributed to my return to good health more quickly. Also, both nurses often spoke with my daughter to keep her updated on my well-being. My daughter, in turn, was able to keep my wife and other children better informed on my status.
I would like to commend Registered Nurse Jaimie Albert and Registered Nurse Sydney Hadfield of 4th floor East for their courteous and compassionate, yet professional approach, toward me time and time and time again. I was up there alone in Mattoon yet they constantly befriended me and cheered me up, ensuring I had little time to feel lonesome. It is amazing how much a pleasant and positive attitude on the part of nurses and other caregivers can aid a patient. Both of these young ladies excelled, and for that I am thankful.”
Sarah Bush Lincoln has joined more than 2,700 healthcare facilities by becoming a DAISY Award hospital partner. During the award presentation, Callaway received a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a unique, hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, entitled, “A Healer’s Touch.”
The DAISY Award was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and families.
Patients, visitors, nurses, physicians and other employees may nominate a deserving nurse for The Daisy Award and a nurse will be selected by SBL’s DAISY committee every month to received this special honor.
